ORAS, Eastern Samar, June 11, 2018–The town of Oras is now drug-cleared after being declared as such by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency. Regional Director Edgar Jubay led the formal declaration and awarding of certificate last week.
Oras is the tenth municipality in Eastern Samar to be cleared from illegal drug activities.
Data from the Oras Municipal Police station show that 24 of the 42 barangays were drug affected and 336 individuals surrendered to authorities when Project Double Barrel was implemented by the Duterte administration.
Oras Mayor Viviane Alvarez gave recognition to the PNP, local government officials and employees, and barangay officials that worked together for months to rid the town of illegal drugs.
Mayor Alvarez assured they will continue the implementaion of Oplan Yakap, a program that will benefit former drug users who have turned themselves to authorities, at the same time strengthen the municipal and barangay anti-drug councils to make sure that the drug-cleared status will be maintained.
Meanwhile, the PDEA is hoping to make Eastern Samar as the 3rd province in the region to be drug-cleared. Their records show that as of May 31 this year, ten of the 22 municipalities and one city are cleared, while 247 of the 408 affected barangays are also drug-free.
Jipapad and Hernani will be the next towns to undergo the validation process of the Dangerous Drugs Board oversight committee.
