GUIUAN, Eastern Samar, March 16, 2017—Four years before the quincentennial of Ferdinand Magellan’s landing in the island of Homonhon, local commemoration this year included a medical and dental mission and a trade fair.
Guiuan mayor Christopher Sheen Gonzales and provincial officials are in Homonhon today to lead this year’s commemoration which will also showcase a re-enactment of the Magellan’s landing in Homonhon to be rendered by schoolchildren after a thanksgiving mass.
Doctors and dentists from the provincial health office conducted the medical and dental mission in Homonhon Island on March 15 while the trade fair, showcasing products from Guiuan and nearby towns, started on March 13.
According to Gonzales, a National Historical Commission of the Philippines marker is set to be installed on the site where Magellan landed in 1521.
“The NHCP said the marker is ready but we couldn’t make it in time for this year’s commemoration,” Gonzales said. (Medora NB Quirante / Este News)
