BALANGIGA, Eastern Samar – The long wait is over for the people of Balangiga as the historic bells finally arrived to where they were taken 117 years ago.

The three bells arrived to Balangiga town at about 4 pm, December 14, 2018 after they were transported by C130 plane of the Philippine Air Force from Manila via Guiuan, Eastern Samar airport.

The arrival of the bells was welcomed with much joy by the townspeople who have waited for them for more than a century.

“Balangiga! Balangiga!,” was the loud cheer as the crate was unloaded from the military truck.

The people expressed their gratitude by exclaiming: “Salamat! Salamat!”

The crate containing the three bells remain unboxed as they will be mounted tomorrow in a movable platform ready for the ceremonies on December 15, 2018 which will be attended by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

The Department of Defense will hand over the bells to Church officials spearheaded by the local bishop Crispin Varquez of Borongan diocese.

The bells were used by Filipinos against American troops to signal an attack which resulted to what was considered the worst defeat of the Americans in the Philippines killing 48 soldiers. The three bells were taken by the Americans in September 1901 from Balangiga as war trophy after their retaliatory attack. (E. Raagas/Este News)
