BORONGAN, August 15, 2019—The Eastern Samar National Comprehensive High School (ESNCHS) conducted its Third Quarter Earthquake Drill last August 13.
The said earthquake drill was administered by the school’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Council and the City of Borongan Search and Rescue Team (COBSART).
The purpose of the earthquake drill was to test the school’s evacuation routes and procedures, communication protocols, and the entire emergency response mechanism.
Aside from preparing the entire school for an earthquake scenario, Naomi Alonzo, the DRRM Coordinator of the ESNCHS, said that the drill was also conducted to assess the learnings of the students who were trained during the DRR Summit held last July.
City Disaster Risk Reduction Officer II Aldrin Abunda said that the trained students for DRRM are expected to be the first emergency responders of the school.
He said that “the drill assesses the entire response mechanisms of the school as it also assesses the skills of the students trained as emergency responders.”
Furthermore, Alonzo noted that the drill is a way of determining the capacity of the students trained for DRRM to deliver the same training as the school administration plans for a wider dissemination of DRRM concepts within the school.
The earthquake drill is a mandatory school activity of the Department of Education. (Elena Bingco / ESTE News)
