BALANGIGA, Eastern Samar, September 28, 2017–President Rodrigo Duterte is scheduled to attend the commemoration of the Balangiga Encounter today in Balangiga, Eastern Samar.
In an interview, acting governor Marcelo Ferdinand Picardal said preparations have been underway since mid-September for the commemoration activities and the president’s visit.
The commemoration will feature a re-enactment of the incident that happened 116 years ago.
“This year, the provincial government has allocated P500,000 for the activity as we will be joined by President Duterte himself,” Picardal said.
In his last State of the Nation Address, Duterte asked the United States to return the bells of Balangiga which were taken by US forces during the Philippine-American War.
The three bells are now in now in Camp Red Cloud, Uijeongbu, South Korea and F. E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA.
“As per the latest information, there won’t be any turn-over of the bells yet,” Picardal said. (Medora NB Quirante / Este News)
