BORONGAN CITY, July 25, 2017–President Rodrigo Duterte has asked the United States to return the bells of Balangiga which were taken by American troops as war booty during the Philippine-American War more than a century ago.

In his second State of the Nation address, the president described the bells as “part of our national heritage.”

To this day, the belfry of St. Lawrence the Martyr parish Church in the town of Balangiga in Eastern Samar, still has a place for the three bells which are now in Camp Red Cloud, Uijeongbu, South Korea and F. E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA.

The Diocese of Borongan with support from the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, has long rallied for the return of the bells, which are property of the Diocese of Borongan. (Medora NB Quirante / Este News)
