BORONGAN, August 1, 2018–Around 200 employees of the Department of Education Eastern Samar division underwent a surprise mandatory drug testing last week, in support of the government’s anti-drugs program.

According to Sarah Cruz, chief nurse of the health and nutrition section of the division, the drug test was administered by personnel from the DepEd central office and the DOH at the Eastern Samar division’s office in Alang-alang, Borongan City.

All employees, from those occupying top posts down to the lowest ranked were tested, while a random test was conducted for high school and elementary teachers.

An employee from the DepEd central office said that drug test results will be confidential. “Drug tests are done, not to condemn or shame an employee or a student, but rather to help them lick the bad habit”, the employee further said.

Last March, high school students were randomly tested for illegal drugs.

The department is now finalizing the regulations of all interventions that will be implemented to clean their ranks, including a rehabilitation program for employees and students who will test positive for illegal drugs.

Since the anti drug program of the Duterte administration was launched, three employees of the department’s Eastern Samar division, including a school head, a teacher and a guard were already apprehended for illegal drug use.  (Eden Cidro / Este News)
