CALBAYOG CITY, August 20, 2018–The city government of Calbayog is seeking the help of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Manila to investigate the numerous unsolved killings here.
Mayor Ronald Aquino said they have sought the action of the NBI to help them investigate the spate of killings victimizing mostly barangay officials.
On Aug. 7, unidentified armed men ambushed and killed Asst. City Engr. Rafaelito “Joker” Serrano.
Aquino said the NBI has the capability to conduct an independent probe as the Calbayog City Police Station lacks the manpower.
He tagged members of a private armed group supported by local politicians in Samar as behind the killings.
“We are seeking the help of the NBI in Manila for an independent investigation of the numerous killings in our city. We rely on them for a fair and real investigation to help us solve these killings,” Aquino said.
Serrano was killed by a riding-in-tandem while on his way to the office last Tuesday. He was supposed to be promoted as city engineer next month.
The victim was the coordinator of Aquino for the Seven Hills and remote barangays of their city.
Barangay Cagmanipi chairman Mark Anthony Giray was gunned down last July 7 while he was driving his motorcycle on their way home with Boyet Dura when they were shot by a still unidentified suspect.
The victim had just come from the Calbayog City Hall when he was murdered.
A total of 14 village chiefs have already been killed in Calbayog since 2013 and are still awaiting justice.
