TACLOBAN, February 12, 2019–Illegal loggers in Samar Island will face the consequences once evidence emerged of their unlawful acts, a local environment official said.

Northern Samar Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Elipio Simon vowed to step up their monitoring operations against illegal loggers.

Up to P2.5 million illegal cut logs and lumber have been sized in the flood-prone province recently.

Simon said they already have the names of the people behind the illegal logging and he will identity them at the right time.

The lumbers and boat keel were seized by the DENR with the help of the military and local police.

The House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources also has its own investigation to stop illegal deforestation in the province.

Residents have blamed rampant illegal logging for the massive flood brought by tropical depression “Usman” last December.

The flooding claimed at least 12 lives and displaced thousands of people. (
