TACLOBAN CITY, May 24, 2018–At least three people were killed and dozens were injured in Leyte province when a bus carrying more than 50 passengers on board plunged into a river on Tuesday midnight.
Declared dead on arrival at the Leyte Provincial Hospital in Palo, Leyte were Windel Simbajon, 15, of Brgy. Dumoy, Davao City; Quinnelyn Galagnara, 3, of Brgy. San Jose, Dinagat Island; and Bryan Noterti, 30, from still unknown address.
Tanauan Police Chief Francisco Tupaz Jr. said the casualties were trapped inside the left side of the Philtranco bus that was half submerged in water.
The bus that was bound for Surigao City from Manila fell into river after the driver lost control along the national road of Barangay Buntay in Tanauan, Leyte.
Tupaz said the Philtranco bus was being driven by Edgardo Legaspi, 49, and a resident of Brgy. Bagong Silang 2, Surigao City.
He is now detained at the town’s police station for investigation and filing of criminal charges.
The cause of the accident is still unknown.
The bus has 49 other passengers and some of them are still confined in different hospitals in Palo, Leyte and Tacloban City.
Some survivors claimed that the bus over speeding when it figured in the accident.
The Philtranco management said they will shoulder all the expenses of the victims including their hospitalization and some will be ferried to their destination using another bus.
Other passengers, meanwhile, are still housed at the Tanauan Civic Center and being provided assistance by the local government. (Nestor Abrematea / Visayas Times)
