BORNGAN, March 4, 2018–“Our athletes have to be really prepared for future sports competitions, and for those chosen to compete in the Palarong Pambansa, I assure you of my support”.
This was what acting Governor Marcelo Picardal said before a crowd of young athletes and sports officials of the DepEd during a ceremony to give recognition to those who won medals in the recently concluded EVRAA meet.
Picardal said that despite the lack of preparations, our athletes still managed to grab medals in different events.
He will meet with the coaches, trainers, coordinators and other sports officials next month to start preparing for next year’s regional sports competition.
He further said that the provincial government will purchase sports equipment, and the swimming pool that he promised will be built once the issues with the budget are resolved.
He urged the athletes to be patient, and trainers not to give up on our players, after all “it is not only the medals that we are after, but the discipline that will help them to be successful in life”.
In recognition of their achievements, the athletes from the Eastern Samar division and the Borongan City division were given the cash incentives promised by the provincial government.
Gold medalists in individual events received P3,000 each, silver medalists got P2,000 and bronze medalists, P1,000.
In the team events, gold medal winners got P30,000, silver medalists P20,000 and bronze, P10,000. Coaches were also given cash incentives.
Education officials thanked the provincial government and all others for their support to the sports program. As one official said, “this is one major program of the department which is not funded, so we are very much dependent on the support of our stakeholders”.
