CALBAYOG CITY, February 7, 2018–Athletes and sports officials from all over the region are gathered in Calbayog City for the week long Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) meet.
The athletes from elementary and secondary schools in 13 divisions are competing for excellence in 36 sports events.
“One of the primary objectives of this athletic event is to promote physical education and sports as an integral part of the basic education curriculum, for holistic development of our young Filipino learners”, Atty. Revsee Escobeda,
Deped Asst. Secretary for Procurement and Field Operations stressed during the opening program held last Sunday.
“Sports is an essential complement in the physical, mental and psychological development of our learners. Through sports, we aim to inculcate the spirit of discipline, teamwork, excellence, fair play, sportsmanship and other values ineherent in every one,” he said.
Acting Governor Marcelo Ferdinand Picardal joined the 649 strong Kidlat Este delegation of the Division of Eastern Samar in the opening day parade to show his support for the athletes.
The provincial government through the Provincial School Board has alloted P3M from the Special Education Fund to be used for the division’s participation in the EVRAA
“We are focusing on individual events like athletics and swimming since these are the events where we get most medals”, Abner Aclao, the ES division sports coordinator said.
He said they are also banking on the performance of their basketball team and the wushu athletes. Kidlat Este hopes to perform better than the 8th place they got in the ranking last year.
Borongan City Mayor Maria Fe Abunda was also in Calbayog for the opening program. She visited the Borongan City delegation billeted at the Christ the King College.
The city division sent a 522 man delegation to the games. The city government has allocated P2.4M to be used for the EVRAA meet.
Borongan City Division Sports coordinator Jessie Tentativa said they will only be participating in 30 events, but he is upbeat on the athletes’ performances, especially in swimming, futsal, wushu, basketball and taekwondo.
Meanwhile, Asec Escobedo challenged the athletes and sports officials to work for a stronger performance at the Palarong Pambansa which will be held in April. “I believe that with your preparation for this year’s Palaro, you will surpass your 2017 Palarong Pambansa performance, he said.
